I went fly fishing on the north jetty, this Saturday. I met another flyfisherman, on the boat ride over. He said it was his second time on the jetty and asked if I fished it, with my flyrod, often. I told him I fished it as much as possible, and that I was going to the end to look for kings and jacks.
He and his family made it to the end about 25 minutes after I did. I was fishing with a friend I met on the jetty two weeks prior, and he quickly hooked a jack. It took him a couple of more hookups before he landed one.
I talked with the other flyfisherman, as we both cast into the same area of water. He was a nice guy and I can't believe I didn't get his name. As we tried to avoid hitting the boats with our cast, he hooked up. The line didn't sing like it was a jack, but it was obviously a big fish. He turned his back to me as he reached down from the mossy rocks to land his fish. As soon as he turned around I saw the nicest speck I have ever seen. It was 29 to 30 inches long and thick. If I wasn't as close as I was, I would have sworn it was a redfish. His wife took a picture, and the fish was released to fight again. He then hooked two separate jacks, and I ended up hooking one later. I still haven't landed one on the fly, but I'm getting closer.

No tarpon, but kings within casting distance, with a heavy spoon.
