I have some surf fishing questions. Coming into town 8/6/ and I mostly fish in the surf catching a lot of whiting and a few reds using dead shrimp on the bottom in the first cut.
I would like to target more trout and reds.

please give some tips thanks

If you are looking for trout, you need to switch baits. I have caught trout on dead shrimp, but you'll do much better with live bait or lures. Try driving down the beach ,in the morning or in the late afternoon, to look for birds working. Pelicans are usually a good sign, seagulls are hit and miss.Try to find a spot away from people, or at least from people in the water. I was down the other day and the surf was perfect for fishing.

Good reply.  Also, try some topwaters.

The trout were fairly consistent in the surf most of the summer but this last week they seemed to have slowed considerably.  I can't help but wonder if the presence of Spanish Mackerel in the surf have had an effect on the trout.

I have most of my luck on topwaters early and late.  Rapala Skitterwalks and Mirrolures are working for me.  It pays to keep an assortment of colors in your box.  One day they'll one color combo and the next they won't even sneeze at it.  Any color combo with chrome, orange and chartreuse seems to be working.

The pesky ladyfish are now in the surf and they will not leave topwaters alone either.
