I went out on the South Jetty yesterday. Sheapshead were being caught left and right, and the reds were almost as thick. Reds have also been stacked in the flats, for the last two weeks. It looks like this is going to be another great march.

Port Aransas fishing reports March 2008

Fishing in Port Aransas has been good this month.  The weather has been nice but a little windy.

This week the places to catch fish are the jetties with reports of sheepshead, red drum, black drum, and Pompano all being cought. The boats out of Deep Sea have reported catches of kingfish, amberjack, shark, grouper, pompano, jackfish and wahoo.   

Black brum have been reported in the ship channel and Specks have been reported in the shallows.

Fishermen on the Piers have reported catching drum, reds and a few trout.

  The fishing has been good the past few weeks and with the nice days to come  should only get better.

Baits of choice this week.
Live Baits – shrimp, Mud minnows
Dead baits –shrimp, squid, sea lice , and mullet.
Artificial baits –gulp baits.

Been fishing in port a for a while both inshore and off. I am working in DC right now but have kept up with a few friends and here is what they have to say...

Reds have been caught almost everywhere. Alyns Bite both inside the bits and the outside. Wade it early with live shrimp under a mauler or popping cork casting into the pot hole, preferably on a falling tide. If you get there real early trout can be caught on topwater and soft plastics. Also, if you boat into the bite and anchor on the left side as you are going in near the duckblind then walk over land into the backside of the flats on the otherside. Many times I have found tailing reds that can be taken with both fly and lure.

Reds have also been caught in lighthouse lakes. Its a beautiful place to fish especially for family and small children as some kind of fish is almost garunteed in big slough. Boat in on a falling tide and fish the small channels that feed into the slough. If you are after the big fish kayak or walk back to the right as you are going into the slough to the adjoining lakes. Do it in the afternoon with the sun at your back. All sight casting. Those lakes can be reached overland by taking a boat out of lydia ann turning left, anchoring and walking over.

Trout have been caught on the outside of mud. Look for a sandy shell mix and throw plastics early.

The backside of harbor can be very effective on a falling tide as well. Fishing the Port A rod and rell tournament last year my partner and I limited on reds almost immediately. Fish shrimp in potholes.

Other noteworthy places...dagger, morrison cummings near flounder docks on a very low tide, jetties are always fun for a mixed back.
