I was in town this past weekend (Fri, 9-15 to Sun 9-17).  The surf was pretty rough due to strong and constant SE winds all weekend.  While top waters were pretty much out of the question, I did hook up two keeper reds in the first (wade) gut on Gulp's New Penny 3" shrimp with a chartrues 1/2 oz jig head.

At first light I fished Charlie's Pasture with a red head, white body Rapala Skitterwalk.  No luck on Fri morning but Sat morn. I hooked up 3 trout in the 25" range but only landed 2.  The third shook off as I tried to lift him out of the water and onto the seawall.   Sun. Morning I had several strikes but no hook ups with trout.  I did land several skipjacks (ladyfish), though.

I saw several really nice reds taken at the ferry landing.  I'm not sure what they're using for bait but the reds are there.  You can see them when get on the ferry to cross.

I'll be back for the last week of Sept.  Hopefully the winds will have subsided some by then.

They are fishing from the sea wall on the seaward side (side closest to the gulf) of the ferry landing and they are casting toward the first ferry landing.  I guess an ocassional Red strolls out there and picks up their bait.  It was fairly congested there.  If you're in line for the ferry (from the island to the Aransas Pass side) they'll be on your right.  You'd have to park at the Marina/boat launch area and walk across the ferry line to get to it.

I'll be coming into town on Thurs (09-28-06).  Sure hope the red run is going strong.  Also, hoping for good surf action.....I'll report back when I return.

The fishing seemed a little slower this weekend.  I don't know if it was the wind, the recent rains, the tides or what.  I managed a couple of decent trout (20" range) on top waters at Charlie's Pasture.  I got one 21" red in the surf on a Gulp shrimp and another 23" on live mullet.

The real story (Now here's a fishing story) was my new state record Ladyfish that I released because I had no clue what the current record was.

Sat. 09/30/06 about 3PM marker 34.
I was using live mullet with spider weight in the second gut.  I had been rigged up for several hours since my last catch (the above mentioned red).  All of a sudden my rod doubled over and the drag began to sing.  By the time I got my rod out of the holder, tightened the drag and began to reel the fish had run nearly 100 yards up the gut.

After a short time I landed the fish and was surprised to see a Ladyfish (skipjack).  It was the biggest I'd ever seen much less caught.  As such I had my wife take it's pic with me and I measured it at just over 28".  I then released it and never thought anymore about it.  I mean, they're not any good to eat, right?

Well that evening I got curious and looked up the record for Ladyfish.  I was surprised to see that the current record is 27.38" and 4.88 lbs.  I don't know what mine weighed by it was longer.  So here's a pic for all the nay sayers.
